South Caucasus 2nd Youth Reproductive Health and Rights Forum

South Caucasus 2nd Youth Reproductive Health and Rights Forum organized within the framework of the EU/UNFPA co-funded project Reproductive Health Initiative for Youth in the South Caucasus“(RHIYC) was held in Batumi, Georgia, September 12-13, 2009.


First Lady of Georgia, H.E. Sandra Elisabeth Roelofs, Mr. Pier Sieben, UNFPA Representative for Turkey, Country Director for Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, Mr. Martin Klaucke, Head of Operations Section of EC Delegation to Georgia, Mr. Neil Datta, Secretary of the European Parliamentary Forum on Population and Development (EPF), members of national parliaments of Europe and the countries of South Caucasus, representatives and experts of Government, academia, leading medical institutions and international and local NGOs participated in the forum.

Participants of the forum discussed the status of the youth reproductive health and rights in the countries of the South Caucasus, assessed the implementation of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) action plan and elaborated upon the role of national parliaments and governments in the sustainable development of youth reproductive health and rights. In addition, participants discussed the innovative approaches and the role of the civil society in ensuring sustainability of RHIYC project. The Declaration of the Action Plan on Sustainable Improvement of Youth Reproductive Health and Rights have been adopted.

Ms. Tamar Khomasuridze, UNFPA assistant representative in: Reproductive Health Initiative for Youth in the South Caucasus’ (RHIYC) is a large scale multi partner project operating in the three countries of the South Caucasus since 2006. The project aimed at building national capacities and regional partnerships to improve sexual and reproductive health status of youth in the South Caucasus. Successful implementation of the project is a step forward towards bringing the sexual and reproductive health services and rights in the South Caucasus closer to the international standards. By achieving its goals, the project assisted countries in reaching Millennium Development Goals and contributed to the agenda of the European integration.”
